Carl-Gustaf Rossby was a central figure in the explosive development of modern meteorology during the 20th century, but his contribution to the establishment of Earth System Science (ESS) was almost never mentioned. Here it is shown that Rossby should be considered as one of the key founders of ESS on account of his advocacy and his influence Carl Gustaf Arvid Rossby ( schwed. Carl-Gustaf Arvid Rossby ; 28. Carl-Gustaf Arvid Rossby (Swedish pronunciation: [kɑːɭ ˈɡɵ̂sːtav ˈǎrːvɪd ˈrɔ̌sːbʏ] 28 December 1898 – 19 August 1957) was a Swedish-born American meteorologist who first explained the large-scale motions of the atmosphere in terms of fluid mechanics. He identified and characterized both the jet stream and the long waves in the westerlies that were later named Rossby waves. His name did CARL-GUSTAF ARVID ROSSBY 25I not appear on any of the published reports of the Bergen school dur-ing the two years he was present. Those who were there say that he contributed some good ideas, but his interests leaned toward theory and he did not yet have the mathematical and physical equipment for good work in dynamic meteorology. Carl-Gustaf Arvid Rossby (ur. 28 grudnia 1898 w Sztokholmie, zm. 19 sierpnia 1957 tamże) był meteorologiem szwedzkim i amerykańskim. Pierwszy wyjaśnił ruch długich fal w atmosferze ziemskiej za pomocą metod mechaniki cieczy. Fleming’s book provides a much-needed perspective on how atmospheric science grew from the 1900s to the 1960s. But instead of simply providing a cold, matter-of-fact descriptive chronology, Fleming adopts a clever approach in reliving the key stages of progress as a fly-on-the-wall, following the activities of three luminaries in the field, Vilhelm Bjerknes, Carl-Gustaf Horace R.
