Dry Fiber Automated Placement Of Carbon Fibrous Preforms

Di: Stella

Abstract Dry fiber placement (DFP) is a technology which enables outstandingly high mechanical performance of composite parts as preform structures with load-related fiber orientations can be created with minimum of fiber crimp. Furthermore, DFP has high cost-saving potential due to minimum material wastage during production. Preforms were produced using a lab-scale automated placement demonstrator. Three preforms configurations were tested to highlight the influence of the preform structure on permeability and mechanical parameters through characterization of the compression behavior and permeability of the produced preforms. The superior material properties of carbon fiber-reinforced composites make them especially attractive for applications in aeronautics and aerospace industries. Cost reduction and time saving are continuously driving industry, leading to new industrial challenges which include manufacturing composite structures with optimal mechanical performances using the potential

As fiber placement, filament winding is a fabrication technique that produces components by continuous fiber (filament) applica- tion to a rotating mandrel in a geometric pattern [2]. The mandrel can be of any shape that has a body of revolution. This method can produce very large shapes, provided that the curvature is every- where positive.
