Both are scouts in College, and Norman Beesley senior has been at Hertford for twenty-one years. His great-uncle was also a senior scout of the College in 1908. In 1970 sixty-one men took Final Honour Schools, two of whom obtained Firsts and forty Seconds. In the preparation of the Magazine I have sought help from many quar- ters, in particular from Sue Finch and Thea Crapper in the College Office, Sarah Salter and her assistants in the Development Office, the Principal’s Secretary, Jill Symonds, Greg Jennings and the IT team, and Graham Jones, the Secretary of the Hertford Society. COLLEGE NEWS THIS YEAR the College is celebrating the centenary of its ref ounda-tion by Thomas Baring with a series of festivities. These began with a Thanksgiving Service in May, at which the Right Reverend Dr R. W. Stopford, Honorary Fellow and President of the Hertford Society, preached a sermon which is published in this issue. This was followed, later in the The Hertford Society, now only ten short of 1,000 members, held its biennial dinner in Hall on June 26th. The Lord Bishop of London presided and H.E. the Governor General of Canada proposed the toast of the College, to which the Principal replied. The Visitor, Mr. Macmillan, dining with the Society for the first time since he accepted honorary membership, then regaled the COLLEGE NOTES WE regret to record the death on 1 o December 1956 of Lord Quicks-wood, Honorary Fellow of the College, and Fellow of the College from 1891 to 1936. A memorial service was held in the College Chapel at the beginning of the Hilary Term.

For the benefit of old members, it may be worth mentioning the most striking changes in University and College organization due to the war.
