I Put Custom Shop Pickups In My Mexican Strat

Obviously this is an extremely opinionated topic but from what I’ve been seeing a lot of people say the Yosemite pickups are the best strat pickups that fender offers. Are their any other suggestions of pickups made by other brands that could be considered “the best” strat pickups like for brands like Seymour Duncan, etc.? I really wanted Joe Barden pickups so I bought a Mexican tele and put them in and changed all kinds of other things with it. It was affordable enough that I didn’t feel peppers clapton and stuff with bad gutting it and it has really put my other electric guitars out of business (including my all original American tele). Different strokes for different folks of course, but if you have some change in your pocket I cannot recommend Lollar Blackface pickups more highly; I put them in my ’92 US Strat Deluxe to replace the Lace Sensors PUPs and I’ve been blown away by ‚em. I have a Custom Shop Jazzmaster, Strat, & have gone through plenty of American/Mexican Strats/Teles. From my experience the Mexican starts are a little more hit & miss quality wise.

The stock pickups were very nice-sounding medium output Alnico V singles. As long as you didn’t put them too close to the strings (the magnets are quite strong) they sounded very sweet and clear — just like a Strat should. The bridge pickup wasn’t my favorite, but I’ve always preferred a humbucker in that position anyway. The pickups were absolute crap so I put in RS custom pickups and it sounds great. Mexican strats have bad pickups?

I put new pickups in my Squire (Fender Vintage Custom Shop) and tonewise they are really nice. What I am noticing is, most pronounced on the bridge pickup but also to a lesser extent on the neck pickup, is that the volume pots are nowhere near linear. Is this normal? I don’t honestly remember if it were different or not before I swapped out the pickups. On the bridge I changed out the pickups in my MIJ Strat but for a very specific reason: it had Duncan stacked humbuckers and they didn’t sound right to me. (Someone else must have put them in, I got the guitar at a pawn shop).

Clearvoyant loaded pickguard I ordered a clearvoyant loaded pick guard with 50s single coils in the middle and neck. I put them in my Squier bullet strat I paid $140 for, it made it sound like a $1000 guitar. The pickups are very balanced between the humbucker and singles. The clearvoyant is clear and bright without being shrill, almost like a tele but beefier.
