Explore the most frequent Land Rover Defender issues (1990–2016), from engine leaks to rust and electronics, with expert maintenance tips and practical solutions. Hi Camelman, My Defender TD5 2007 Feb model had this problem from the day I bought it till Sept last year. Diagnostics could never pick a fault up as the jerking never showed up on the dash indicators. Fortunately last year on the way back from Moz the 110 throttle packed up and the engine remained only on idle. Being that close 5kms from the border I decided to idle Land Rover Discovery Series II models fitted with 2.5 L Td5 diesel engines are problematic due to an issue with oil contamination in the loom. The engine oil finds its way inside the loom and works its way towards the ECU

Also by adding this check valve to later engines does suggest that LR thought, „Hey, maybe we need a check valve here to stop diesel run back“. Another thought I will propose is that did the 10P engine fuel senders have a full tank depth air bleed pipe? If so then the system was closed and unless there was a leak no air could get

The mechanisms have any in both are alike however automated differently. 3 problems fairly common on the Td5 is the harness between injectors and ECM. (oil in harness), crank position sensor and MAF. if it was glowplugs, it would only affect cold starting. if injectors, the problem would be there on starting and running. rev counter not related to crank sensor as far as i know. ideal would be to get onto

About a year ago I posted here stating that my TD5 110 had a weard knocking sound between 1800 and 2100 RPM. More of a harmonic buzz than an engine knock. The engine always pulled extremely well and had no problem revving smoothly to 3500. Over time it got louder and moved to the 2400 to 2600 rev band. Hello all, got a little problem with my 1999 Td5 90 it all started when the fuel pump gave up the ghost so I’ve now fitted the new pump and replaced the fuel filter and followed the purge / bleed out of the haynes manual. But all I seem to get now is the land rover turning over but failing to sta Hi, I am new to the forum. I have inherited a freelander TD4 but its not working that well. Does anyone have advice or had this problem? 2016 – my sister had the car for 5 years, driving as normal then total loss of power and fuel pouring out underneath engine. Car towed back. Web research Hi all, Thought it might be helpful to record my misfire problem and solution. The 2001 Discovery II TD5, 80k miles, with a fsh started ‚misfiring‘ under load and above about 2,500 RPM. Of course being a diesel misfire is not the correct term – but it ran rough and would not pull, seemed short on

(i hope so).my current one is a 2004 disco now got 65000 on the clock, dont do any towing but do some hard Yes, TD5 wiring looms are prone to giving you problems. Land Rover (or whoever made their wiring looms) must have had a cheap batch of wire sometime sin the early 2000s. The insulation tends to It s in a 2004 go brittle and crisp and the conductors are quite stiff and brittle too, or at least they are after ten years or more. I replaced the engine loom (the ‚red plug‘ one) on mine early Hi All, My D2 Td5 has been daily driver for last few months and was running fine when parked last night. This morning it cranked and fired briefly (felt like it was less than a second) then cut out. It now cranks but does not fire. Nanocom shows no faults logged. Battery is good (12.9 volts), fuel is good, fuel pump runs, injectors can be heard actuating when tested

Hi My TD5 has started to develop an intermittent starting fault – some days it starts first time, with hardly any cranking – other times it will crank and struggle to ‚catch‘, when it eventually does fire, it runs fine. I’ve replaced the Fuel Filter Housing complete assembly, fitted a

Hello there, hope all is well. I have been posting about my problem with a discovery series 2 TD5 year 2000 a few times, I have owned for 25 years now. It started with a shaking engine all of a sudden and it would stop running after a while. We ran a nanocom diagnostic, which was not helpful, I had a similar problem with a 1994 M reg disco, initial problem was the same but developed to the engine cutting out every now and then, all lights on the dash working but no starting, turn off the ignition and wait a few minutes I have a 110 Td5 which has a very strong, worrying vibration at around 2,500rpm (no rev counter, so working back from the speed using Mr Ashcroft’s calculator). The vibration occurs even in neutral, so I’m pretty sure it’s engine and not gearbox/prop shafts/etc. – I have read that the natural frequency of the Td5 is around 2,200rpm so a failing damper can cause

Discover common Land Rover TD6 engine problems, their causes, and insights from owners to keep your vehicle running smoothly. Hi, I’m having problems starting a TD5 engine that I rebuilt. It’s in a 2004 Defender. The engine turns over well and has a new starter motor. All of the injectors click when tested with a Nanocom. No security codes conductors are quite stiff and are shown. I believe that the issue is Hi, I’m really stuck on what to do next on my Discovery 2 TD5 it developed a problem the other month, where it was smoking (Black Smoke) like mad and misfiring and not idling, but as soon as you went over 2k revs it was fine, but you had to sit there revving it to keep it going. so I changed

Thank you too all that are using and sharing on the forum. I’ve tried t search the forum, and others for answers. It seems that the problem is common, but not the solution to my problem. My problems started this spring, and there have been some hours in frustration and in Gents, Recently had the radiator split in my 110, fitted a new one last night but I still have an issue: Filled the system until I got a ittle coolant coming out of the bleed screw in the top hose, ran the engine for a minute at tick over then topped Land Rover diesels usually outlast the vehicle they were supplied with. That’s why there are so many good Tdi and Td5 engines available from rusty Discoverys that have been scrapped. Look after your diesel engine (religiously adhering to service intervals and using top-quality lubricants and filters) and it will most probably

Your problem sounds very much like an arching starter motor spiking the crank sensor wiring and confusing the engine ecu.The my sister easy starting when warm is because the starter draws less current when the engine turns over more easily – less sparks.
