In 1939 the English stockbroker Nicholas Winton rescued 669 Czech children from their doomed fate in the Nazi death camps, but his achievement went unrecognised for over half a century. Sir Nicholas Winton was a British humanitarian who organised the rescue of 669 mostly Jewish children from Czechoslovakia on the eve of World War II, later known as the Kindertransport.
